Breathe Counseling

Helping you Conquer Your Mountains

Everyone Has a Mountain

Some battles feel like they’ll break you. Some secrets feel too heavy to speak out loud. We get it—and we’re not afraid of any of it.

At Breathe Counseling, we meet you in the middle of the storm. We’re harder than your hardest day, stronger than the secrets you’ve been carrying, and ready to fight alongside you because you shouldn’t have to stand alone.

Your mountain might be grief—aching for someone you lost while the world tells you to “get over it.”

Maybe it’s trauma—memories that won’t loosen their grip, fear that still creeps in when things should feel safe.

Maybe it’s identity—trying to figure out who you are beneath the roles, the expectations, the silence.

Or maybe it’s the quiet weight of anxiety and depression—so familiar it feels like part of you, even as it drags you down.

The Climb Is Real—But So Is the View

Imagine the bitter ascent:
The scrapes. The steep, twisting path. The exhaustion. The quiet moments you nearly gave up.

Now picture standing at the summit, lungs full of cold, clear air.
Looking back at the miles you’ve traveled—and whispering to yourself:
“I did it.”

You Don’t Have to Do It Alone

Whatever you’re facing, we won’t flinch.
We bring grit, skill, and steady hands.
We hold your hardest truths with strength—and your softest moments with care.

This is a place where you don’t have to fight alone anymore.

Our Colorado Counselors

Ryan Smith

Ryan Smith, MA, LPC-S, NCC, CTP

Founder & Clinical Director, Breathe Counseling

I was told not to go into trauma and grief work because it was “too heavy.” That’s exactly how I knew it was where I belonged. My passion is walking alongside people carrying life’s heaviest burdens—grief, trauma, suicide, and everything you’ve been told is “too much.” You don’t have to carry it alone. I’m here to help you hold it—and to lay some of it down.

Originally from just south of Greeley, I earned my bachelor’s degree in psychology from the University of Northern Colorado in 2023 and am currently pursuing my master’s in Clinical Mental Health Counseling through Adams State University. My goal is to become a licensed professional counselor and support as many people as I can.

In session, I strive to create a space where you feel safe, seen, and free to be fully yourself. Cry, yell, curse—whatever you need to do to be real. You’re welcome here, just as you are.

Kendall Staggs

Kendall Staggs

Colorado Counselor

After earning a Bachelor’s in Music from Southeast Missouri State University in 2017, Kendall began their career teaching elementary music in Colorado. It was during this time—listening deeply to students during “share time”—that Kendall discovered a passion for helping others in a more personal way, leading them to pursue a path in counseling.

Kendall is especially dedicated to serving the LGBTQ+ community and welcomes anyone who feels they’d be a good fit. Their approach is client-centered and grounded in cognitive behavioral therapy, with a focus on creating a safe, affirming space for exploration, growth, and healing.

April Strohauer, LPCC

April Strohauer, LPCC

Breathe Counseling Practice Manager

Born and raised in Greeley, I have a deep love for this community and a strong passion for helping others. I’m currently working toward licensure as a counselor, with a focus on supporting adolescents and adults navigating anxiety, depression, trauma, and self-esteem challenges.

Before entering the counseling field, I taught kindergarten and continue to lend a hand on my family’s farm. I know firsthand how much mental health impacts everyday life, and I’m here to provide a space where you can feel supported, understood, and empowered to grow.

About Our Counseling

Strong enough to hold your pain. Soft enough to hold your wounds.

At Breathe Counseling, everything we do is built around one mission: to help you heal, grow, and live with more strength and clarity. Whether you’re working through trauma, fighting daily anxiety, or just trying to stay afloat, therapy isn’t about fixing you—it’s about walking with you through the mess and into something better.

Here’s what that work can look like:

1. Improved Mental Health

You don’t have to carry this alone. We help you process the hard stuff—anxiety, depression, trauma, stress—and learn how to get back in the driver’s seat of your own life.

2. Greater Self-Awareness

We help you see the patterns, name the stories, and connect the dots. When you understand what’s driving your reactions, you can start making moves that actually serve you.

3. Healthier Relationships

Struggling to be heard? To say what you need? To stop giving too much or pulling away? We’ll work on that. Because strong relationships start with honest connection—and that starts here.

4. More Resilience

Life doesn’t let up—but you can get stronger. We’ll help you build the tools to ride the waves: emotional regulation, boundaries, self-compassion, and grit.

5. Real Growth

Therapy isn’t just about healing what hurts. It’s about becoming who you actually are—confident, clear, and grounded. Even if it takes time. Even if it’s messy. We’ll be right here for the journey.

Therapy isn’t easy—but neither is staying stuck.
At Breathe Counseling, we show up with strength, skill, and deep compassion to help you do the work that changes things—for real.

You don’t have to be fine. You just have to be ready.

At Breathe Counseling, We Believe In…

Generosity

We give a damn—and we show it.

At Breathe Counseling, generosity isn’t a buzzword. It’s how we lead, support, and serve. We give our time, energy, creativity, and care freely—because real healing doesn’t happen when people feel rushed, dismissed, or like a number. Whether it’s staying a little longer in session, checking in between appointments, or making space for a team member who’s having a hard day—we lead with open hands and full hearts.

Curiosity

We don’t pretend to know your story before you tell it.
At Breathe Counseling, we lead with curiosity—not assumptions, not quick fixes. Healing asks us to step into the unknown, and we’re not afraid to go there with you. We ask hard questions, follow the threads, and stay present in the mess. Because real growth doesn’t come from having all the answers—it comes from being brave enough to explore.

Humility

We’re not here to play expert—we’re human, too.
At Breathe Counseling, we know that real change doesn’t come from pretending to have it all figured out. We stay curious, open, and honest about what’s working and what’s not. Failure isn’t the enemy—it’s part of the process. We lead with humility because healing isn’t about perfection. It’s about showing up, staying teachable, and doing the work—together.

Expertise

We don’t coast—we sharpen.
At Breathe Counseling, expertise isn’t a title—it’s a commitment. We stay in the trenches with the latest research, evolving best practices, and real-world experience because people are trusting us with their healing. We take that seriously. Growth doesn’t stop at graduation, and “good enough” isn’t good enough for us. We stay sharp so we can show up strong—for every client, every time.

Adventure

Healing isn’t a straight line—it’s a wild, worthwhile ride.
At Breathe Counseling, we’re not here to walk the same worn paths. We believe growth means taking risks, leaving behind what’s no longer working, and stepping into the unknown—even when it’s uncomfortable. We move forward with courage, curiosity, and the grit to face what’s real. This isn’t about playing it safe. It’s about finding something better, together.

Innovation

If there’s a better way, we’ll find it.
At Breathe Counseling, we don’t stick with “how it’s always been done” just because it’s familiar. We question, test, build, and rebuild—constantly looking for smarter, deeper, more effective ways to support our clients and each other. From new tools to better systems, we embrace change as a path to progress. Because good enough? Isn’t.

Learning

We’re always students—of the work, and of the people we serve.
At Breathe Counseling, we know growth doesn’t have a finish line. There’s always more to learn, more to unlearn, and more to understand. We stay curious, open, and committed to evolving—whether it’s diving deeper into clinical research or listening closely to the lived experience in the room. Every day is a chance to do it better. We take that seriously.
