Therapy and Faith Aren't Enemies

Christian Counseling

If you're looking for this, you've probably had the worry: that therapy and faith don't mix. That a counselor will treat your religion as the problem, or as a symptom, or as something to gently walk you out of. That you'll open up about your life and your beliefs and feel a subtle pressure to leave the faith at the door, or worse, feel judged for it.

That's not what happens here.

We're not going to pathologize your faith, argue you out of it, or treat it as a coping mechanism you'll outgrow. For a lot of people your faith is the center of how you understand your life, your suffering, and your hope, and a therapist who ignores that or quietly works against it isn't actually helping you. Here, your faith is welcome in the room as what it is to you: real, load-bearing, and yours.

What faith-integrated counseling actually means

It doesn't mean we replace clinical work with Scripture, and it doesn't mean we only take clients who believe exactly the right things. It means we do real, evidence-based therapy, and we do it in a way that takes your faith seriously instead of around it.

You're also allowed to be tired. You can love your faith and find your small group exhausting. You can believe every word of it and still be furious at God about something, people in the Bible were, regularly, and it didn't disqualify them. You can have a doubt you've never said out loud because you're afraid of what it makes you. None of that is too much for this room, and none of it is news to God. We're not going to clutch our pearls, and we're not going to treat your faith as too fragile to survive you being honest inside it. Faith that can't survive an honest conversation isn't the kind we're protecting.

You set the level. Some clients want their faith woven through everything. Some want a therapist who simply won't work against it. Both are welcome, and we'll follow your lead rather than impose ours.

What we work with

The same things any good counseling addresses, anxiety, depression, grief, trauma, marriage and relationships, parenting, life transitions, and the ones that carry a particular weight for people of faith: guilt and shame that have wrapped themselves around your beliefs, a marriage you're trying to honor and also survive, doubt that feels like betrayal, the exhaustion of holding it together for a congregation or a family, church hurt.

If your faith is central to your marriage, we can bring it into that work too, couples counseling with your faith in the room when you want it there.

For pastors, missionaries, and ministry families

If you're in ministry, you know the specific loneliness of it: everyone comes to you, and there's nowhere for you to go, and admitting you're struggling can feel like it costs you your calling. You spend your life being the strong one, the steady one, the one with answers, and you have nowhere to bring the nights you don't have any. You need a place to fall apart that won't end up as gossip and won't cost you your role. We understand that world and we hold it in confidence. You're allowed to not be okay.

How we work

Your consultation is with the person who'll be your therapist, not an intake coordinator. The first session is a conversation, and you can spend it telling us why you're wary of therapy, or of us, and that's a fine use of the time.

In our Greeley office, or by telehealth across Colorado, including Loveland and the surrounding area.

Frequently asked

Are your counselors all Christian? Not all of them, and you can request one who shares your faith. What every clinician here will do is respect it and work with it rather than against it, whether or not they share it.

Will you tell me my faith is the problem? No. We're not here to deconstruct your beliefs or talk you out of them. If anything, we help you bring your faith to bear on what you're facing, and we can hold the honest, hard questions too, the doubt, the anger, the church hurt, without it becoming a threat to what you believe.

Is this Biblical counseling / will you only use Scripture? We do real clinical therapy, integrated with your faith at the level you want. If you want Scripture and prayer central to the work, we can do that. If you want faith simply respected while we do the clinical work, we can do that too.

Do you do Christian marriage counseling? Yes. For couples who want their faith in the room, we integrate it into the work when you ask us to.

Do you take my insurance? Aetna, Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield, UnitedHealthcare and Optum, and every Colorado Medicaid plan, with a sliding scale for private pay. Check your actual per-session cost in about thirty seconds, no phone call.
